Course Title Psychoeducational Assessment of Children with Special
Needs

Course Description:

This course is designed to provide graduate level instruction in the theoretical and practical foundations of evaluation and assessment of students with special needs. Emphasis will be placed on the background needed for evaluators to determine special education eligibility. It will outline procedures for designing or selecting, administering and interpreting a variety of informal assessment measures typically used in schools. Skills taught will include assessment practices necessary in IEP planning/development, and linking assessment data to instructional methodologies.


Course Objectives:

Provided with varied learning activities, the students are expected to:

1. Understand the need for authentic educational assessment in the light of current expectations of schools.
2. Describe any past or current governmental initiatives that either impact educational assessment and its rationale for the initiatives.
3. Discuss the major steps in the assessment process and its procedure for processing referrals for assessment
4. Select and discuss appropriate informal assessment measures.
5. Learn how to make educational or behavioral recommendations based on assessment data.

Methods of evaluation:

1. Classroom participation.
2. Accurate, ethical, and valid administration of tests of achievement, language,
Reading , Math and social emotional development.
3. Presentation of a student’s assessment data in an IEP. The data must be interpreted correctly and linked with appropriate instructional strategies.
4. Development of an assessment portfolio. The portfolio will contain at least the following artifacts: (a) well sequenced information of all formal and informal assessments completed during the course, (b) written classroom observations of targeted students, (c) summaries of interviews conducted with students, their families, and their general education teachers, (d) a self assessment/reflection of the learning that occurred during the course.
